A synapse in which the release of an inhibitory neurotransmitter (commonly GABA) from the presynaptic cell reduces the probability of an action potential in the postsynaptic cell. The inhibitory neurotransmitter opens channels in the postsynaptic cell that stabilize its resting potential. See excitatory synapse.
