Quick Reference

An unwanted descent in altitude of a satellite's orbit. This is usually due to a decrease in speed caused by aerodynamic drag. To counteract this effect, thrusters on a satellite must be fired occasionally to maintain its correct orbital station. A satellite that descends low enough into the atmosphere to burn up is called a decayed satellite.
