A class of giant propeller-like proteins that interact with the β2 subunit of cardiac L-type calcium channels although predominantly present in the nucleus. Ahnak1 (5890 aa), was first identified as being identical to a bovine desmosomal protein, desmoyokin; a similar protein ( Ahnak2, 5795 aa) was identified later. Dysferlin is involved in the recruitment and stabilization of Ahnak to the sarcolemma and Ahnak seems to play a role in the dysferlin membrane repair process. Ahnak and dysferlin are markers for enlargeosomes, a type of cytoplasmic vesicle.
