The Noble Enclosure. Muslim sacred precinct on Mount Moriah in Jerusalem and the site of two Islamic holy places, the al-Aqsa mosque and the Qubbat al-Sakhra (Dome of the Rock). After Mecca and Medina it is the third holiest site in the Islamic world, a place of Islamic pilgrimage for fourteen centuries. It also contains the earliest major surviving Islamic architectural monument, the Dome of the Rock. Presently administrated by Islamic authority under Israeli control. Originally the site of the First and Second Jewish Temples, the precinct is today the subject of contention between Israelis and Palestinians.
