The word means “risk” and is the name of a gambling card game. In public health and epidemiology, it is often a synonym for risk factor, meaning the inherent capability of an agent or a situation to have an adverse effect, that is, a factor or exposure capable of adversely affecting health or causing harm or injury. Health hazards may be behavioral, such as tobacco smoking; physical, such as exposure to toxic chemicals; biological, such as exposure to infectious pathogens; or psychological, inducing stress.
