A pastoral role in those secondary schools which operate a ‘house’ system. The teacher who is appointed head of house has pastoral responsibility for all pupils in that house, much as a head of year has in schools which do not operate a house system. Perhaps the most famous heads of house currently are the fictional ones responsible for the pupils in the four houses at Hogwarts School in the Harry Potter books.
