A hazardous substance such as a toxic chemical that contaminates the environment, i.e., the air, water for drinking or irrigation, soil, or food. Hazardous pollutants such as lead, mercury, and arsenic can occur in furnace emissions, and many kinds of toxic chemicals used in or occurring as by-products of industry can enter water courses (rivers, lakes, aquifers) or leach out of toxic dump sites.
