1 (Barber: Antony and Cleopatra). Sop. Queen of Egypt, in love with the Roman Antony. After Antony has been forced to marry Octavia, sister of the Emperor, he leaves her and returns to Cleopatra. As Roman troops approach, Cleopatra hides in her tomb monument. Believing her dead, Antony kills himself and dies in her arms. Created (1966) by Leontyne Price (at the opening night of the new Metropolitan Opera House in the Lincoln Center, New York).
2 (Handel: Giulio Cesare). Sop. Queen of Egypt, sister of Tolomeo. When her brother has Pompey murdered, she goes to Cesare to join him in defeating Tolomeo. She is taken prisoner by her brother's troops but Cesare rescues her. Aria: V'adoro, pupille (‘I adore you, eyes’). Created (1724) by Francesca Cuzzoni.
