Quick Reference

Any of a class of solid or semi-solid organic products, usually polymers of natural or synthetic origin; they are soluble in ether or acetone but insoluble in water. Polymethylmethacrylate denture base resin is formed by mixing beads made from polymethylmethacrylate and an initiator (benzoyl peroxide) with liquid methyl methacrylate monomer and polymerizing (curing) at room temperature (self-curing, cold-cure, auto-curing) or by the addition of heat ( heat-cure). The impact strength may be increased by grafting a rubber-like butadiene-styrene polymer to the acrylic molecules. If polymerization is incomplete, the residual monomer can result in a soft tissue sensitivity reaction.
