Any hormone that is a peptide or polypeptide, in contrast to a steroid hormone; the hormones of the hypothalamus and most of the endocrine glands being peptide hormones, apart from those of the adrenal cortex, testes, and ovaries, which are steroid hormones. Many peptide hormones function also as neurotransmitters.
