loess

Show Summary Details

Quick Reference

A computationally intensive method for fitting smooth curves or surfaces to a set of data. The procedure fits polynomials (usually linear or quadratic) to local subsets of the data, using weighted least squares so as to pay less attention to distant points. Loess requires no predetermined model for the entire data set, but therefore provides no explicit formula for the smoothed values.

Subjects: Probability and Statistics.
