Solo modern dance with choreography by Ailey, music by Alice Coltrane, Laura Nyro, and Voices of East Harlem, and lighting by Chenault Spence. Premiered 4 May 1971 by the Alvin Ailey company at City Center, New York, with Judith Jamison. This life-affirming solo, created specially for Jamison, became her most famous role. The choreographer dedicated it to ‘black women everywhere—especially our mothers’.
