An international project, distinct from the Human Genome Project, that has the objective of analysing the DNA that varies between different ethnic groups, in order to understand the origins and migrations of human populations and the genetic basis of differing susceptibility to disease. Opposition from many groups, particularly those representing ethnic minorities (which were not consulted in the development of the project) has generated considerable controversy. See genome.
