A programme under which the European Space Agency is developing three different forms of satellites for Earth observation. Sentinel-1 satellites will use synthetic aperture radar to continue the observations made by Envisat, including day and night coverage of sea and ice state. The first launch is scheduled for 2011. Sentinel-2 satellites will provide high-resolution optical images for environmental monitoring, including the provision of data related to the implementation of the Kyoto Protocol and subsequent legislation. First launch is scheduled for 2012. Sentinel-3 satellites will provide medium-resolution, global, and multispectral optical coverage monitoring ocean, ice, and land conditions, continuing the observations made by ERS, Envisat and similar missions. First launch is scheduled for 2011–12.
Subjects: Meteorology and Climatology.
