A bacterial infection of a joint marked by fever, swelling, and pain in the affected joint. It is associated with other infections and requires urgent medical attention. During the acute stage, the joint should be relieved of any load, and the pathogenic organism identified and then eliminated with antibiotics. After the acute stage, isometric exercises may be introduced to offset muscle atrophy. Physical exertion should be resumed only with medical guidance.
