Ballet in two acts with choreography and libretto by Petit, music by Maurice Jarre, sets by René Allio, and costumes by Yves St Laurent. Premiered 11 Dec. 1965 by the Paris Opera Ballet with Motte, Petit, Atanassoff, and Bonnefoux. Based on Victor Hugo's 1831 novel of the same name, Petit's ballet is centred on Quasimodo, the hunchbacked bellringer, and Petit himself danced the role at the ballet's premiere. It was his first work for the Paris Opera since leaving twenty years earlier. It was revived for the Marseilles Ballet in 1974 and for the Kirov Ballet in 1978.
