A term which embraces sages of Israel as well as those in Egypt and Babylonia, and in particular the Magi, astrologers from the east, who visited the infant Jesus (Matt. 2: 1–18). In Israel from the time of Solomon there may have existed wise men who taught at the king's court in order to preserve the nation's traditions (Jer. 8: 8–9; 18: 18).
