Quick Reference

The space between two teeth created by the convexity of the surfaces. It may open onto the labial, lingual, buccal, palatal, or occlusal surfaces. An adequate embrasure space is an important consideration in the periodontal-restorative interface; it must be incorporated into fixed prostheses to facilitate oral hygiene procedures and maintain oral health. An embrasure hook provides stability for a partial denture and is an extension into the embrasure above the contact area. An embrasure clasp is part of a partial denture used where no edentulous space exists, which, having passed through the embrasure, engages the undercut area of the tooth surface. An occlusal embrasure is the space between the curved proximal surfaces of the teeth which opens towards the occlusal surface.
