The barring of a pupil from attending school, either temporarily (up to fifteen school days) or permanently. Behaviour for which pupils may be permanently excluded includes bullying, carrying weapons, acts of violence, supplying drugs, sexual misconduct, and persistent non‐compliance. Pupils who have been excluded from secondary schools may be provided by their local authority with a place in a pupil referral unit, where they can continue full‐time with their education, although this will not necessarily include full coverage of the national curriculum.
