Any dental instrument with a sharp point used to conduct a tactile examination of the tooth crown or root surfaces. It is used primarily to investigate carious lesions, hard surface deposits, and restoration margins. There are many different shapes, of which the most common are straight, half-moon, and Briault (double-ended with angled tips), designed to fulfil specific functions. See also probe.
