The evaluation of an individual's performance by others. Social evaluation has a powerful influence in sport, especially for top-class sportspeople whose performances are scrutinized by the mass media (see competitive stress). Sports that focus directly on individual performances tend to be more evaluative than team-sports in which responsibility for performance and outcome is shared.
