Ballet in one act with libretto and choreography by Cullberg, music by K. Riisager, and designs by Kerstin Hedeby. Premiered 21 Apr. 1960 by American Ballet Theatre at Metropolitan Opera House, New York, with Serrano, Bruhn, and Tetley. It is based on Ibsen's play of the same title and tells the story of Ellida who is trapped in a loveless marriage and longs for her real love, a sailor who has returned to the sea. It was revived for the Royal Swedish Ballet in 1961. An earlier version of the same story was choreographed by E. Leese for National Ballet of Canada (mus. S. Honigman, 1955).
