In psychoanalysis, psychic energy in the primary process, which seeks immediate and total discharge through the most direct route available. Sigmund Freud (1856–1939) published his theory of free energy and bound energy in 1895, in his ‘Project for a Scientific Psychology’ (Standard Edition, I, pp. 177–397), basing it on the principle of constancy.
