The title given to the chief executive of a college of further education. It is also used at some universities instead of the title vice‐chancellor. In a small minority of English secondary schools it is a title given to the head teacher, although this use is the norm in American schools, as many English pupils will be aware through watching the confrontations between Principal Skinner and his nemesis, Bart Simpson.
