Within the media effects tradition, a hypothesis involving a sort of reverse modelling whereby television viewers react so strongly to some extreme example of realistic violence that they are less likely to imitate it. Where viewing of violence is ‘light’, sensitization may be more likely than desensitization. See also violence debate.
