Indian Ocean island settled by French colonization in the seventeenth century. The population is a mixture of French, Africans (descendants of slaves), Creoles, Indians, and Chinese. About one-third of the Indian population, which is now the majority, are Muslims, forming an important Muslim minority of about 13 percent of the total population.
