Syn: mental deficiency. Subnormal mental or intellectual function, usually originating in infancy or childhood. There are several levels, based on scores on the Wechsler scales. Mildly retarded persons are educable; moderately retarded persons can be trained to use the toilet, dress, and feed themselves; severe and profoundly retarded persons require varying degrees of personal care and supervision.
