An action taken by a database server when data stored on the server is changed. For example, when a new customer is entered into a bank database, a trigger is activated which sends information about the customer and the client which carried out the process of creating the customer, to an audit file. A trigger which carries out data validation, for example checking that a user has typed in a correct account number for a banking application, is known as a rule.
