Quick Reference

Islam has been in China for over thirteen hundred years, with a current Muslim population of more than thirty million. Muslims first came to China as traders and itinerant teachers. Chinese expansion into Central Asia incorporated Muslim peoples such as the Uighars into the state, so that Muslims in China include both Hui (Chinese Muslims) and people from Muslim ethnic groups. Throughout history, Muslims have served as prominent imperial officers as well as opponents of imperial expansion. Under Communist rule Muslims experienced suppression, but they received support from Muslim countries in the international context of the Islamic resurgence at the end of the twentieth century.
