This article examines verb reduplication, verb movement, and object shift in Gbe languages. It shows that these languages manifest an articulate I-system in which each feature traditionally associated with INFL is the property of a functional head that projects within I. Tha article suggests that the verb–object versus object–verb asymmetries in these languages are better accounted for in terms of the interactions between object shift and verb movement on the one hand and clause-structure differences on the other.

Keywords: Gbe languages; verb reduplication; verb movement; object shift; IFNL; clause-structure differences
