This article examines grammaticalization and clitic placement in the context of Berber clitic (CL). It suggests that the distribution of clitics in Berber is consistent with the generalization that they are attracted to functional categories and never to lexical ones. The article argues that CL placement is determined to a large extent by syntactic considerations because there is no evidence for the involvement of prosodic factors applying at the phonetic content.
