This article takes a look at the emergence of digital media and considers the future of film narrative. It begins with a section on the late age of film, which is described as the period where film is an established medium and is being challenged by various forms of digital media. The next section looks at “remediation,” or the strategy where designers of one medium place their work in relation to other media. The article also identifies the two defining moments in the history of film. The first was when the Lumière brothers' actualités, or the filming of everyday events, led to the claim that the new medium could provide viewers with a real and immediate experience of the physical world. The second event was the development of narrative film, which can also be understood as an attempt to give viewers the feeling of immediacy or presence through the power of storytelling. The history of film has suggested two strategies for the pursuit of transparent representation, which are perceptual immersion and compelling narrative. The article also takes a look at Walter Benjamin's concept of aura.
