This article takes a look at the organized societies, or the collegia, in the Roman Empire. It begins with a section on the study of “social relations” within, and in connection to, the collegia before the 1970s. This is followed by a section on the collegia in the works of Ramsay MacMullen and Géza Alfödy and a discussion of the internal relationships of Roman collegia. The relations of the collegia with their patrons are also studied in this article.
