This article explores the two peculiarities of Japanese nominals—namely, multiple possibilities for numeral placement and the existence of an indeterminate system. The properties of nominal expressions turn out to provide interesting insights into the internal structure of DP. In addition to addressing analytical issues, the article also puts together basic data on the syntax of quantifiers in Japanese in a more or less comprehensive way. The discussion of Inoue 1978 and Haig 1980 results in the problem of partitive constructions. Distribution of quantifiers other than the numeral is then dealt with in relation to the problem of partitive constructions. The syntax of quantifiers and indeterminates in Japanese provides an exciting arena for exploring the general theory of features and agreement.
