This article discusses the three general approaches to the study of political thought, namely: political philosophy, history of political theory, and contemporary social and political thought. The article describes the changing conceptions of religion's role and discusses how the secular understandings have been challenged by religious ones. It shows how the political meaning and purpose of religion has continued to be contested. An evaluation of the current status of scholarship in the field is also provided.
