This article attempts to trace the multiple economic trajectories that occurred in Late Antiquity. The discussion includes the dissolution of the Western aristocracy; the erosion of the Gallic aristocracy that proceeded apace with the consolidation of Gothic power in the fifth century; and the collapse of Italian aristocracy in the sixth century.
