This chapter reviews recent evidence on the social neuroscience of social support in an attempt to examine the physiological pathways potentially producing such effects. It starts by examining the more established links between social support and peripheral physiological processes. This is followed by a discussion of evidence linking support to activation of specific brain processes that are implicated in stress and self-regulatory processes more generally.
