The impact of legislative changes on the traditional definition and role of school psychologists is discussed. Specifically, the influence of the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB, 2001) and the reauthorization of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act (IDEA, 2004) upon the practice of school psychology is reviewed. The potential impact of NCLB and IDEA on the employment outlook for the profession is considered. Finally, the dual standards and competing efforts of the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP) and Division 16 of the American Psychological Association (APA) have had on the field of school psychology is discussed.
