The incidence of depression and anxiety among children is a serious concern, often going unrecognized. This chapter reviews the characteristics of these problems found in children, the enormous cost to society in the adult population when depression and anxiety go untreated, and assessment methods available for early detection in a school setting. School-based prevention and intervention strategies and programs are highlighted, with a focus on the movement toward Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) implemented for all students. Barriers to implementation are discussed, along with strategies known to promote integrated and sustainable practices. The chapter concludes with a discussion of the impact of other ecologies on the development of internalizing problems, highlighting the need for targeted prevention and intervention efforts in other settings. Future directions are proposed regarding areas where additional research and practice are needed.
