Classroom Interventions for Attention and Hyperactivity


Problems with inattention and hyperactivity are the core behaviors comprising attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Students exhibiting ADHD-related behaviors experience significant difficulties with behavior and academic performance. Thus, classroom interventions can be used to address these difficulties in the context of a three-tiered, data based, problem-solving model. Specific intervention strategies addressing behavioral, academic, and social functioning are described across all three tiers. A case study is provided to demonstrate the implementation of this three-tiered model for a student with ADHD. Alternative classroom interventions with little to no empirical support are also briefly described. Finally, the chapter concludes with a delineation of limitations of the extant treatment literature, and suggestions for future directions.
