Introduction and Overview


This chapter provides a brief introduction to and overview of the contents of the Handbook. Several issues are highlighted, including the history of eating disorders over the ages, diagnostic issues including the overlap of eating disorders and obesity, and the problem of eating disorders not otherwise specified (EDNOS). The relative neglect of eating disorders in childhood and adolescence is noted. Finally, progress toward building an evidence base for the treatment of eating disorders is considered.
