 Urbanization of the South

This article concentrates on three topics. The first is population change, mainly urban concentrations, the rise of large cities, suburbanization, and the region's changing urban “hierarchy.” The second connects population trends with boosterism, economic development, and social change. The third links urbanization and politics. Analyzing urbanization in the South might seem to be a simple matter of tracing the movement of people from rural to urban areas. The region's urban transformation did not follow a common blueprint, and the so-called hierarchy among southern cities has changed substantially over time.
