The scientific framework of psychoneuroimmunology was established with the discovery of reciprocal relations between neuroendocrine and immune systems. This bidirectional communication allowed new insights into functions and mechanisms of defensive processes, including the behavioral symptoms of inflammation. The present chapter suggests a motivational analysis of inflammation and related defensive processes. After the description of the fundamental elements concerning the concept of motivation and its relevance for behavioral sciences, the chapter details the characterization of the influence of the immune system on the brain as a motivational system.
