All authors in this volume forecast the most important work to be done in their areas, and synthesizing these forecasts reveals some old and new themes for the future of psychoneuroimmunology research. The desire to understand mechanisms of PNI relationships is a long-standing one, but new methods will advance progress toward satisfaction of this desire. The desire to understand causality and to effect meaningful clinical change underlies the calls for intervention research. This research will be advanced when more kinds of intervention become available. Good, longitudinal methodology and large samples will be required to demonstrate that immune changes mediate between psychological factors and health. Finally, forward-looking research will be examining how the many intraindividual, interpersonal, social, and developmental factors influencing immunity interact with each other.
