This article discusses how philosophical reflection might contribute to the improvement of education in Latin American music schools for the benefit of the students' general education. It discusses the scarcity of studies and research on music philosophy and philosophy of music education in that region, as well as the prevalent notion which considers music an exclusively practical activity with no abstract mental reflection. The article also presents the benefits of considering music as an action that implicates reflection and responsibility. The discussion introduces examples of philosophical problems related to musical interpretation. Furthermore, it proposes changes in conventional notions of the education of music professionals, changes that might foster broader horizons in teaching music educationally. Finally, the article argues that music and music education philosophy are among the crucial foundations for music-teaching practices, wherever and at whatever level they occur.
