Daniel Defoe built his novel, Adventures of Robinson Crusoe upon the foundation of his Puritan beliefs, which were being challenged by the developments in literature and journalism, trade and shipping, and business and political life in the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. Defoe saw God's hand everywhere, including in the events that today we call the “news.” This article explores the coverage of religion in print media, focusing on the invention of the printing press and the link between print culture and the Western religious tradition. It then considers the role of text in Christianity, the development of journalism as an extension of capitalism, secularism and the influence of the Enlightenment on journalism, the impact of Charles Darwin's theory of evolution on religion coverage, and the emergence of marketing and commercialism as a competing ideology with traditional religious values. The article concludes by discussing postmodernism, digitization, and religion coverage in the Internet Age.
