This chapter takes a macrosystemic perspective, using the ecological contexts of class, gender, human development, cultural norms, media, and societal prejudices to analyze large-scale mass trauma. This framework allows the consideration of a diversity of interventions at multiple system levels that are grounded in social justice advocacy, multicultural competencies, and social capital theory. Examples are presented of long-term community-based interventions, brief individual and group counseling six months and later into disaster trauma, and psychological first aid in the immediate aftermath. Individual and community resilience that counteract mass trauma are briefly discussed. This chapter reviews theory, research, and policy, as well as the first author's experiences as a volunteer psychological responder, with the goal to prepare counselors for disaster relief work.
