The archaeology of ritual and religion is still in its infancy in Oceania, but much work has been done in the last twenty years to allow archaeologists to provide more subtle and anthropologically nuanced narratives on this topic. This article aims to make sense of the diversity of the material in both chronology, beginning with the area where Pleistocene settlement is attested, and geographically in relation to the tripartite division of Melanesia, Micronesia, and Polynesia.
