This article focuses on the study of ancient Egyptian ritual and religion. It begins with a discussion of sources for studying ritual and religion. It then takes three ritual genres that are particularly well expressed in archaeological material — rites of exchange and communion, rites of affliction, and rites of passage — as a means of conveying further the character of the source material and some prominent directions of research.
