There are many different relations the emotions bear to the arts. This article focuses on the ways in which emotions are manifest in the arts. According to some philosophers, it is of the essence of art that it manifests emotion—that, indeed, is art's defining feature. Although the article does not discuss Collingwood's theory, it discusses the concept that is central to it: namely, the expression of emotion in the arts. There is a great deal of published work on the expression of emotion in music; there is significantly less on the expression of emotion in the other art forms. The article discusses the expression of emotion in music and then the expression of emotion in paintings. In the course of doing so, it discusses some other ways in which the emotions can be manifest in the arts.
